You might have heard of Giving Tuesday, and be wondering what it’s all about. We’re here to clue you up on one of the UK’s biggest charity days, and tell you how you can get involved.
Giving Tuesday began in the UK in 2014 and raises millions of pounds every year for charities. The event runs across 70 countries globally, so you might see a lot of social media posting from different organisations around this time.
If you want to do something good this Giving Tuesday, it’s really easy to get involved. The most straightforward way is probably just to donate to your chosen cause, but you could also host a bake sale and send the proceeds to a charity, or do a sponsored event like a run. Some people create shoeboxes full of helpful things for the homeless, and companies get involved to support some amazing good causes.
This year, we’d love it if our followers could help us and be part of The ARC’s journey—our new mental health service, a floating residential childrens’ home. We’re re-purposing a 55m Dutch Coaster, and this huge boat is going to need to be kitted out with things to help those in need.
We’ll have children staying with us for prolonged periods of sometimes months, often from a care background that need mental health rehabilitation. . The ARC will provide a wide range of therapeutic treatments, physical activities, education, and life-skills that will help children reach the next stage in their life, and help them to become valued members of society as they progress towards adulthood.
As you can imagine, buying a 55m boat and repurposing it has been an incredibly costly affair, and now we’re down to the finer details, we need some extra help. If you’d like to donate to us to help us buy basic necessities like mattresses, duvets, sofas, lamps, washing machines, irons, saucepans and crockery, as well as a few of the fun things in life such as exercise equipment and some games for the children in our care, we’d love for you to help.
We’re asking local businesses to contact us if they think they could donate some of the things we may need, (you can contact us for a full list) as well as asking for individuals to help us raise much-needed funds to help some of the children entering into our care who have had an often incredibly traumatic past. So why not make a difference to a child in need this Giving Tuesday, and make a donation to help?
You can email firstname.lastname@example.org for the full list, or give us a call on 01326 378919. Thank you for reading about Giving Tuesday and our charity, we couldn’t have made it this far without our followers and supporters, so a big thank you to all of you from the Sea Sanctuary and The ARC team.
