Take the Helm blends emotional health education and maritime-based activities for 15-24 year olds.
Our programme consists of marine based activities including sailing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking and powerboating.
These activities are interwoven with psychological support, giving young people the opportunity to discuss emotions, feelings, anxiety, stress and a host of other presenting issues in a supportive environment.
The programme looks to build on transferrable skills, raise esteem, confidence, improve emotional well-being, and identify and break down barriers for future achievements and goals.
The days on-board are structured around sailing the beautiful Cornish coastline and exploring the water ways around Carrick Roads, interspersed with psychological education which is drawn from both Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
Each young person will take advantage of the sun and sea and life on an ocean-going vessel as a core building block for improved wellbeing, better emotional resilience, and long-term mental health.
The programme is also suitable as a means of prevention, where individuals are encouraged to learn and adopt effective coping strategies that will see them improve and maintain their mental health.
The Take the Helm programme provides you with a tool box and our practitioners teach you how to use the tools in their day to day life.
